Rich countries may be close to normal by the end of 2021 if a vaccine against covid-19 is ready soon, works and is distributed properly on a scale, said billionaire and Microsoft founder Bill Gates on Tuesday.

“By the end of next year, we can have things practically back to normal – this is the best of cases,” Gates, 64, told The CEO of The Wall Street Journal.

“We still don’t know whether these vaccines will be successful,” said Gates. “Now, it will take time to speed up capacity. And that is why the allocation within the United States, and between the United States and other countries, will be a major point of friction ”.

The vaccines developed by Pfizer / BioNTech and AstraZeneca / University of Oxford are two of the favorites in the race to be the first to obtain regulatory approval in the West to avoid Covid-19.

Gates added that in the United States, people should be thinking of ways to reduce the hesitation of using a covid-19 vaccine when it becomes available.

Asked about vaccines from Russia and China, he said Western companies are more advanced in advanced-stage studies.

“The only Russian candidate and the six Chinese candidates are perfectly valid concepts, in fact, with some similarities to what Western companies are doing, but Western companies are more advanced in these advanced stage studies,” said Gates.
